I keep yelling at my kids. How do I change the pattern?

Many caring parents yell when they are overwhelmed or feel unheard. The goal is not perfection. It is to notice the buildup earlier, respond differently, and repair when things go wrong.

What might be happening underneath?

I do not expect parents to stay calm every minute of every day. I do encourage us to notice what pushes us beyond our limits. Often, changing the pace, expectations, or routine around a difficult moment makes it easier to respond the way we want to.

A few things I would try

  1. Practice a short pause phrase: “I’m getting frustrated; I need a moment.”
  2. Use fewer words and one clear instruction instead of escalating reminders.
  3. After yelling, take responsibility without blaming the child: “I was too loud. I’m sorry. Let’s try again.”

Questions parents ask

Does apologizing undermine my authority?

No. Repair can model accountability while boundaries remain in place.

What if I feel angry all the time?

Persistent irritability, burnout, or feeling out of control is a reason to seek additional professional support.
