My partner and I disagree about parenting. What can we do?

Differences in parenting may reflect values, family history, stress, or different readings of the same child. Parents do not need identical instincts, but children benefit from a workable shared plan.

What might be happening underneath?

I do not expect two parents to see every situation the same way. I begin by helping each person feel heard and identifying the values they share. From there we can work toward an approach that feels more consistent to their child and more sustainable for the adults.

A few things I would try

  1. Choose one recurring challenge and agree on a common response.
  2. Practice brief, respectful handoffs when one parent becomes overwhelmed.
  3. Review what worked weekly and adjust together.

Questions parents ask

Do parents need to agree on every rule?

No. It helps to be consistent on important boundaries and clear about reasonable differences.
