My child knows what to do but never starts homework. How can I help?

A child can understand an assignment and still struggle to initiate it. Executive-function demands, anxiety, learning differences, fatigue, or overwhelm may be part of the problem.

What might be happening underneath?

One of the first things I want to understand is where the process breaks down. Is it getting started, remembering the instructions, keeping track of time, or staying with the task? A child who needs support starting is not necessarily a child who is unwilling to work.

A few things I would try

  1. Start with a two-minute entry step and a clear workspace.
  2. Co-create a visible plan with breaks and a realistic stopping point.
  3. Coordinate with school when the struggle is persistent or disproportionate.

Questions parents ask

Should I sit next to my child for every assignment?

Temporary support may help, but the long-term goal is to identify what scaffolding the child needs to work more independently.

What if homework causes nightly panic?

Consider anxiety or learning difficulties and seek school or clinical support where needed.
